According to the American Journal for Clinical Nutrition, for every
10-milligrams of B6 and
10-micrograms of B12, can lower developing depression by 2%. apparently more senior citizens have higher levels of depression because of their lack of intake of B12. Also, folate is another vitamin that helps with depression. other supplements aid in positive moods but b6 & b12 are more preventive against depression.
Along with adequate levels of b6 and b12, does exercise enhance the ability of these vitamins to decrease depression?
ReplyDeleteHey alyssa! that's a good question. While I know that aerobic exercise can increase serotonin levels on it's own and thus increase happiness and well-being thereby decreasing depression (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2077351/), I wonder if it's either the lack of vitmatins or lack of exercise or both...
ReplyDeleteShannon I'm curious, does folate interact more so with B6 and B12 vitamins to lower developing depression or does it have its own resounding effect? By what mechanism do these vitamins interact to create such possibilities?
folate is part of the B vitamin group and apparently so far when there are low levels of folate, depression is more present. what these three do well together is limit the floating homocysteine in blood. homocysteine contributes to heart disease and stroke.
